This is the latest official top 40 music chart, from all the artists Adele, Beady eye, Nero, Wretch 32, The Wombats and Noah and the Whale are indie music artists. Adele is in the top 3 of the of the charts showing Indie music is popular in todays choice of music, Wretch 32 is in the top 10. However Nero, The Wombats and Noah And The Whale are below the top 10 showing that some indie music isn't as popular.

My Initial Ideas

I have chosen to target my magazine at middle class sixteen to eighteen year old females, who are interested in indie music, I will focus my magazine on female inspirational composers and song writers such as artists like Eliza Doolittle and Lykke Li. My magazine will have a slight fashion slant on it also. Although it will have a fashion and lifestyle slant music will be the main focus of the magazine. My magazine will include a front cover, contents and double page feature article. I have chosen the middle class as i believe there is a gap in the market for this type of music magazine.

Analyzing A Contents Page

Analyzing A Front Cover

Magazine Conventions

All magazines whether they are Lifestyle, Fashion or Music, follow all the same rules. There are different types of magazines, the more expensive monthly "glossies" (Q, Marie Claire) or cheaper weekly magazines (NME, More). They will all include relevant images, logos and headers, modes of address, stars and celebrities, front covers, contents pages and feature articles.
The imagery included must always be relevant to the genre of the music and appropriate for the target audience, this also applies to the name (also known as the header) of the magazine. There will always be a set colour scheme throughout the magazine which will add to creating a "house style" and appeal to the target audience.
All magazines will also have modes of address; this is the way in which a text creates a relationship with its audience. The most common MOD in magazines is direct address- this is created when the person on the cover looks straight out of the magazine which invites the reader in. The opposite of direct address is indirect in which the person looks away, although this is not a convention it has been used on magazine covers. MOD can also refer to the writing in a magazine and how it addresses the reader usually in an informal way.
The front cover of a magazine is its main advertisement; here they usually include stars or celebrities to increase sales resulting in, increase of profits. The magazine cover should be bright, interesting and eye catching enticing the reader to buy the magazine. Not only should the colours and font types be attractive but they should be relevant and represent that particular genre of music.
All covers should include a title/header, slogan, one main model star and/or group photographed, a leading caption, subheadings and strap lines. The date and barcode will also be on the cover and sometimes a web address can be included too.
The magazine cover has to entice the reader in enough to read the double page spread also known as the feature article as this is usually the most expensive article of the magazine. Features articles should be bright and interesting and include multiple images of the artist/s. Grab texts can also be used to catch the readers attention.

Feedback 28.1.11

Jenna, you need to be working on this project in your frees and from home. By now you ahould have posted your initial ideas for yur magazine and completed a second post outlining the conventions of magazine front pages, contents and features. (Please see the coursework book notes for details.) You need to give your sketched contents for the prelim to Mike for scanning and then this must also be uploaded with your front cover. You next need to find a real music mag cover, contents and feature to analyse. Ideally you should be completing the research at the start of next week and moving on to planning this time next week.

Please ensure that you book your workshop time with Mike for one evening next week.

Premilary Task

This is my premilary task, our task was to produce a St Mary's College magazine, this is the front cover for the magazine.
There are improvements that could be made to this front cover, firstly when shooting the picture, i didn't think to have the picture face on because i captured the side of Luke's face it doesn't bring the audience in.
